2013 NFL Wildcard Playoff Games Preview

The 2013 NFL Playoffs have finally arrived, and they are all set to begin with the wildcard matchups this weekend. While the league’s top 4 teams earned bye weeks and get to rest their weary legs, these underdog football teams will be put to the test right away, with their entire seasons hanging in the balance.  While these supposed “lesser” NFL squads have a long and hard road to the Super Bowl, such teams often do win the big dance, so none of them should be counted out.  But who will get past that initial first hump and into the divisional round?  Here is a preview for the NFL wildcard games this weekend:
Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts – The Chiefs will probably lose this game.  Not only did they lose to the Colts 23-7 just two weeks ago, but they have now lost 5 of their last 7 games, a rather grounding experience following their 9-0 start to the season.  The only playoff team that the Chiefs have beaten is the Philadelphia Eagles.  Meanwhile, the Colts have topped the 49ers, Seahawks, and Broncos, making them one of the most dangerous teams around.  Is Andrew Luck ready to lead a playoff run?  I think so:  Colts win 23-7.
New Orleans Saints at Philadelphia Eagles – The Eagles rebounded from a bad start and now feature one of the NFL’s most dynamic offenses.  With the emergence of quarterback Nick Foles, the team thrives around the explosiveness of DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy.  However, the Saints also feature a high-scoring offense led by Drew Brees.  They have quite a strong defense and could have potentially earned a bye if not for the surprising year by the Carolina Panthers.  Although the weather will be cold, I foresee a shootout with the Saints winning through a defensive stand late in the game:  Saints win 41-35.
San Diego Chargers at Cincinnati Bengals – This is a total offense vs. defense matchup.  Philip Rivers leads a delightful passing attack by the Chargers, while the Bengals defense is amongst the best in the league.  These are two solid teams that could both do well in the playoffs, but I think the miraculous Chargers dream ends this week, as Andy Dalton and AJ Green should be able to muster enough points while the Chargers get slowed down by that defense.  Nevertheless, the game should be close, possibly featuring a poetically just missed field goal by the Chargers at the end of regulation:  Bengals win 20-17.
San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers – The 49ers have the key ingredients for success in the playoffs: a strong defense and a powerful rushing attack spearheaded by Frank Gore.  They amassed a 12-4 record but are forced to go on the road as a wildcard team due to the great year by the Seattle Seahawks.  The Packers suffered to an 8-7-1 record with quarterback Aaron Rodgers missing nearly half the year.  However, he returned last week and won in miraculous fashion over the Chicago Bears, converting a dramatic last-minute 4th and 8 for a touchdown.  They also have a strong running game led by rookie Eddie Lacy.  However, their defense is very questionable.  But with temperatures set to be in the single digits at Lambeau Field, this game will be a major test for both sets of players.  While Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers have dominated the Packers in recent games, Green Bay looks invigorated with Rodgers back at the helm, and I see them as a team of destiny: Packers win 28-24.

Former NFL Star Junior Seau Drives Car Off Cliff

Junior Seau, former NFL star for the San Diego Chargers, was hospitalized at the Scripps La Jolla Hospital in San Diego earlier today with minor injuries after driving his vehicle off a cliff. The incident occurred approximately nine hours after being arrested for domestic assault.

Seau's white Cadillac SUV was located on the beach about 100 feet below the roadside. Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain described the cliff as a "significant, rough slope".

Seau's 25-year-old girlfriend claimed she had been assaulted during an argument the day before at Seau's Oceanside home. She did not require medical attention but she did appear to have minor injuries. Seau was not home when the police had arrived but he returned when the police asked him to return when he had called his girlfriend. Seau was arrested and was later released.

Seau, who is 41 years old, was a star linebacker for the University of Southern California before being picked fifth overall in 1990 by the San Diego Chargers. He helped the Chargers go to the Super Bowl in 1994 and was later traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2003. Seau left football for four days after 16 seasons in August 2006. He then signed with the New England Patriots and started 14 of the 27 games he played for them over the next two seasons. He retired after the 2007 season but came out of retirement for the final four games in 2008. He then played a partial season in 2009.

Norv Turner replaces Schottenheimer as Chargers head coach!

It has become official. Norv Turner, Offensive Coordinator for the San Francisco 49er's, has received his third shot at being a head coach in the NFL. He will immediately take control of the San Diego Chargers, the best team of 2006.
The San Diego Chargers also hired Minnesota Vikings Defensive Coorindator Ted Cottrell to become their very own Defensive Coordinator. After Ron Rivera, Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator, was released, the Chargers gave him a job also as the linebackers coach. Rivera had also interviewed for the Chargers head coaching position along with several other teams.

With all of these changes, I don't think the Chargers will be as good as they were last year. Now it will be interesting to see which team will pick up Schottenheimer as their head coach.

Schottenheimer Loses Job!

Did anyone see this coming? San Diego Chargers fired Coach Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season!

Team President Dean Spanos cited a "dysfunctional situation" between Schottenheimer and General Manager A.J. Smith. This was after several of Schottenheimer's assistants left for head coaching jobs or coordinator jobs. Schottenheimer is due $3 million dollars for his final year on his contract.

Come on, why should Schottenheimer lose his job because some of his coaches left for other teams. They left because they had opportunities to become a head coach or a coordinator. They didn't leave because they did not like Schottenheimer or lose their job because the team was bad. They left because of their talents and opportunities to use those talents.

So much for having a winning seaon. NFL coaching jobs are not safe, but at least they get the rest of their contract money. $3 Million dollars for getting fired isn't all that bad.

What do you think should have occurred? Do you think the Chargers will be as powerful next year with an all new coaching staff?

Another NFL Player Guilty of a Felony

Should the NFL be called the Numerous Felony League? Another NFL player has pleaded guilty to felony charges.
San Diego Chargers Safety Terrence Kiel has pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor drug charges for shipping codeine-based cough syrup to Texas. As part of a plea bargain, Kiel has to undergo counseling for gambling and do 100 hours of volunteer work, including talking to young people about the dangers of drug use.
If Kiel abides by his plea bargain, he will avoid jail time, and be placed on probation.
Shouldn't these guys already be doing community service? The 100 hours of volunteer work is not a sentence.
