Baseball Legend Lou Piniella Retires

After 48 years in Major League Baseball, legend Lou "Sweet Lou" Piniella called it quits shocking Chicago Cubs fans. He had announced about a month ago that he was going to retire at the end of the season, but unforseen circumstances sped that process up.

Piniella's mother has been ill and he stated he wanted to be with her. “My mom needs me home and that’s where I’m going,” said the 3-time World Series champion. “She hasn’t gotten any better… So the best thing is just to step down and go home and take care of my mother.” According to ESPN.com, the surprising announcement was made last Sunday morning in a team handout.

Piniella's storied career began in 1964 when he made his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles. He would go on to play for the Cleveland Indians, the Kansas City Royals, and the New York Yankees before retiring as a player in 1984. During this 20 year career, Piniella retired with a .291 batting average, 102 home runs, and 2 World Series titles to his name. Piniella then moved on as a manager for various MLB teams with his most recent stop being with the Chicago Cubs). During his managerial career, Piniella won another World Series title and 3 Manager of the Year Awards.

We wish Piniella the best of luck and our prayers go out to his mother.
