Last Monday the Philadelphia Phillies fans got a show that they never expected to see while watching their team play the St. Louis Cardinals.
During the eighth inning, a 17-year-old hopped a fence at Citizens Bank Park and began running on the field. Just before he did it, he had called his father to seek permission. His father told him it wasn't the brightest thing to do. As most teenage kids do, he did not listen to his pop and did it anyway. His actions lead to an arrest for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and defiant trespass. I guess this isn't all that unusual as we see fans run out on the field all the time and do really stupid stuff sometimes. Sometimes while on the field they try to actually assault someone like the time when Kansas City Royals coach Tom Gamboa was attacked with a switch blade.
What's unusual about this one, is that a Philadelphia police officer chased the young lad and then deployed a Taser and dropped him like a sack of potatoes right in left-center field.
The Phillies spokeswoman stated that the police department is investigating the matter and discussing with the team to determine if the use of the Taser was appropriate. The Philadelphia police commissioner is publicly supporting the officer's actions. Obviously at the time, the officer doesn't know if the kid wants to commit a serious crime and attack someone, or if the kid is just having fun and wants to run around the field. The officer probably did not want to take the chance that something more serious was about to take place.
Whether fans think the officer was right or wrong, we're sure that they will think twice now before running onto the field in Philadelphia as those police officers mean business.
